Just What Do You Know About Wood Floor Protection ?

Wood floor protection and care are essential to keep wooden floors looking great for several years or decades. Wood floors add a touch of elegance and charm to a house - a touch no other type of flooring can add just as well as wood does. But wood is delicate and requires lots of care and proper maintenance.

Before we discuss how to protect wood floors, we might want to know ...

How the ambient environment affects wood floors

Wood is very sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature. While manufacturing wood floors, they are kiln dried from about 30% moisture content to about 6% to 12%. This makes them suitable for use in homes where the relative humidity level usually is between 35 to 55%. But in the drier months when the humidity levels reduce, wood floors can develop cracks. So it would be essential to protect your wood floors from changes in humidity levels.

Also, spills or leaks can alter the moisture content in certain sections of the wood floor and thus damage it. Excessive moisture can cause wood floors to crack, cup or buckle. You might also want to ensure that moisture from the sub floor does not affect the wood floor as this can damage the wood floor too.

How to protect wood floors

Avoid using water to clean a wood floor. A dust mop or a vacuum should be usually sufficient to clean the floor. If you want to use cleaners, then you might want to use only those recommended by the manufacturer ( in case of pre-finished wood floors ) or by the floor finish manufacturer ( for unfinished floors that are finished at the site of installation ).

Cleaning all spills the moment they occur would be a great thing to do.

Avoid using abrasive cleaners or steel wool on wood floors.

Use mats in kitchen, laundry room and other areas with wash basins to protect your wood floor from spills.

Avoid  exposure to direct sunlight for extended periods of time regularly.

Although wood floor protection does take time and effort, with the right care and maintenance wood floors can remain beautiful and functional for several years or even decades.
