1. See LOTS of photos of kitchens designed by architects : As some wise person
said, a picture is really worth a thousand words. The best thing you could do
when you want to generate ideas would be to look at lots and lots of photos of
very well designed kitchens. What design elements have the architects used, what
features have the focused on, what kind of lighting and colors appeal to you and
so on.
If you look at hundreds of pictures, then you will be able to determine a lot
more easily what kind of design appeals to you the most. You get to know your
own desires better. And once you know what it is that you really admire in
beautiful kitchens, you will be able to incorporate either the same or similar
elements in designing your own kitchen.

50 Great Kitchens by Architects : Not only does this book have great photos you can use to generate ideas, but
also quotes from an architect about the important design elements. That makes it
very valuable when you are educating yourself about the basics of kitchen
design.

you generate a lot of ideas. This book showcases what's hot and happening in
kitchen design today.
The Kitchen Planner: Hundreds of Great Ideas for Your New Kitchen

Kitchens should be beautiful and appealing. But a kitchen is not like a painting
or a statue. Kitchens must also be functional. That's what this book is about.
You may want use this book to stimulate your brain into creating a gorgeous yet
functional kitchen. You may want to be prepared to do some heavy lifting
mentally while using this book to create ideas for a functional design.
2. Watch interior design related videos on YouTube : YouTube is a great place to
look at lots of designs AND listen to what experts have to say about the
designs. It's almost like taking a class on kitchen design. Except that you can
do it from the comfort of your home. And for free. This is one resource you do
not want to do without :-)

And this one is about a home design software that
lets you design in 3D. You could use it to remodel kitchens, dining rooms,
bathrooms, closets and more. It lets you overlay tiles, apply textures, add
lights, possibly choose from a range of fixtures.
Seeing hundreds of photos, videos and listening to what experts have to say
about the designs is like taking a crash course in design. You should be able to
generate brilliant ideas now all by yourself. Still, there's one thing you could
do that might stand you in very good stead ...
3. Ask the experts : Get the opinions of contractors and designers. What do they
have to say about your ideas ? Do they have any suggestions to make your designs
prettier or more functional ?
You see, generating brilliant ideas is excellent. But experience isn't to be
overlooked either. Contractors and designers would have looked at hundreds of
designs and built or remodeled tens or even hundreds of kitchens. They know what
it takes to build or remodel one. And they most possibly should be able to offer
you some very helpful ideas that can make your already great designs even better
!
The best thing is that you can get top notch expert advise for free. Yes, that's correct. There are so many kitchen design related forums and all you have to do is post your question and you should have an expert answer it pretty soon.
